Antje Weithaas, German virtuoso violinist, offered hikers lucky enough to be staying in or near San Martino di Castrozza (province of Trento) a free open-air recital at noon today. She played works by Ysaÿe and Bach against a backdrop of mist-shrouded peaks.

San Martino is nowhere near Poggiosole but it is as near as Poggiosole to my heart. My parents first brought me here as a teenager and I now I bring my children. My two youngest (3 and 5 years old) almost made it through the entire recital: a credit to maestro Weithaas’s playing. For her encore, during which she’s pictured below, I scurried up next to the mixing engineer, and afterwards complimented him on the miking and amplification, which rendered Antje’s playing beautifully.

I have a long-range goal of bringing musical acts, from DJs to classical performances, to Poggiosole. This experience confirmed that intention.
